DescriptionThis watercolour shows the marriage of Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster, to Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, which occurred after the Battle of Waterford in 1170. The Marriage is depicted as a politically significant union. Maclise draws attention to the fact that this event marked the loss of freedom and power for the native Irish.
