DescriptionJacque was a French artist who specialised in painting animals. In 1849 he and his friend Jean Millet moved with their families to the Barbizon countryside, to avoid the cholera epidemics sweeping across Paris. They went on to become central figures in the Barbizon Group; a colony of artists that painted rural scenes from nature.

Jacque focused largely on farmyard subjects, with sheep and poultry being particular specialities. He also ventured into poultry breeding and, in 1858, published an illustrated manual on the subject.
