DescriptionThis Belfast born artist is best known for his distinctive 'flower landscapes' which comprise low viewpoints, usually composed of a foreground of wild flowers intermixed with grasses, with a distant yet recognisable landscape visible through the flora. He collaborated with George Petrie and Henry O'Neill on an illustrated book: Picturesque Sketches of some of the finest landscape and coast scenery of Ireland, (1835). The influence of J.M.W. Turner is evident in this dramatic scene. The artist expressively renders the effects of stormy weather rather than simply delineating a view. The dark sky, wind tossed waves, atmospheric effects of light on water and tiny figures on the headland, echo Turner's style.
