Title: A Standing Philosopher and Hand Detail; Architectural Studies (on verso)
Date: c.1509
Medium: Ink on paper
Credit Line: Purchased, 1866
Object Number: NGI.2271
DescriptionThis drawing is linked to Raphael's celebrated 'School of Athens' fresco in the Vatican, which depicts the great philosophers and scientists of the ancient world. Although this figure does not appear in the finished work, the classical drapery and the figure's monumental quality are characteristic of the fresco. This drawing appears to be a later, more carefully worked, version of a study in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille. There is a rough architectural study on the verso. Like many of the most important Old Master drawings in the Gallery's collection this sheet was bought at the Wellesley sale, and previously formed part of Sir Thomas Lawrence's collection.
