DescriptionThis is one of a number of preparatory drawings made by Parmigianino while he was working on the decoration of the side chapels of the church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma between the years 1522-23. It reproduces, with slight variations, the motif of a putto embracing an eagle (St John the Evangelist), painted by Correggio (1489-1534), on the frieze running around the base of the cupola. Parmigianino may have referred to preliminary studies by Correggio, or he may have copied it from the fresco itself.
