DescriptionIt is likely that this finely worked pen and wash drawing was intended to be sold as a finished piece. It is prominently signed on the flag flying from a Dutch Indiaman, on the far right of the composition. The date the drawing was made, 1696, is visible on the flag of the United Provinces on the yacht at the centre of the sheet. This drawing was among the last purchases made by Henry Doyle (1827-1892) the Gallery's second director.
