Label TextThough associated more closely with portraiture and etching, Estella Solomons was also an accomplished landscape painter. This understated view of Rosapenna, near Downings, Co. Donegal, indicates Solomons’s uninhibited and unfussy approach to everyday subject matter. She shared a deep affection for Donegal with her friend and fellow painter AE (George Russell), visiting that part of the country regularly, and exhibiting many landscapes she produced there. From the late 1930s onwards, Solomons turned her gaze more frequently to Co. Kerry, but chose similar coastal subjects to those that had inspired her in the north-west.
