Title: Dutch Auricular-style Frame
Date: 1660-1663
Medium: Carved and silvered wood
59.7 x 73.7 cm
Credit Line: Presented, Otto Naumann, 2003
Object Number: NGI.12264
Label TextThis ornate frame strongly resembles the one that appears in the background of Gabriel Metsu’s Man Writing a Letter (exhibited on the right). As elaborate frames such as this were works of art in their own right, it is highly likely that it was a unique piece. Therefore, we may assume that Metsu knew this particular frame. The frame is now covered with silver leaf, which is probably a later addition. Comprising intertwining plants and a dove in the top centre, the frame includes elements of the Dutch ‘auricular’ style, which is based on parts of the human anatomy.
