DescriptionThe photograph was taken at the end of a day De Chenu spent photographing the community of Cistercian trappist monks at Mountmellary Abbey in County Waterford. He visited the grotto, which had become well known following a number of accounts of apparitions that took place in the 1980s. The woman spoke of the experience she was having as the photograph was being taken. When exhibiting the photograph De Chenu used the extended caption ‘ A woman experiencing a statue of the Holy Virgin manifesting itself as the faces of Jesus and Padre Pio’ to try to convey the context.
