DescriptionJohn Minihan first made contact with Samuel Beckett when he was directing “Endgame” at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, west London, in the summer of 1980. He met Beckett at Hyde Park Hotel to show him his pictures of Athy, which form the core of his artistic practice. Minihan recalls that Beckett looked at his Athy photographs for a long time and ended the meeting by saying “These are important pictures.” On that note, Minihan asked if he could visit Riverside Studios to photograph Beckett in action and this request was eagerly granted. Minihan would go on to photograph Beckett several times throughout his career: again at Riverside Studios in 1984 while Beckett directed “Waiting for Godot”, in London in 1985 ahead of Beckett’s 80th birthday; and in Paris later that same year.
