Label TextChinnery is best known for the portraits, landscapes and sketches of everyday life he produced in India and China. During his residence in Ireland from 1796 to 1802, however, he proved an active and important member of the Irish cultural community. His friends included musicians, actors and fellow artists, and he helped to revive the Society of Artists in Ireland. In 1799 he married Marianne Vigne, daughter of the Dublin jeweller with whom he had taken lodgings. This is one of several portraits of Marianne he produced.
