DescriptionThis work is drawn from Scully’s celebrated Landlines series, which is underpinned by the artist’s study of landscape and began as early as 1999. These paintings, which feature deep horizontal swathes of rich colour, echo the compositional junctions in the landscape. ‘I think of land, sea, sky’, Scully has written. ‘And they always make a massive connection. I try to paint this, this sense of elemental coming together of land and sea, sky and land, of blocks coming together side by side, stacked in horizon lines endlessly beginning and ending – the way the blocks of the world hug each other and brush up against each other, their weight, their air, their colour, and the soft uncertain space between them’ (Sean Scully: Landline, exh. cat. Hirshborn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington (2018), 11-12). The reductive paintings themselves point to Scully’s familiarity with the European landscape tradition, but also his appreciation of American Abstract Expressionism.
