DescriptionErich Hartmann visited Dublin for the first time in 1964. He had already explored the city extensively in his imagination, ever since he first read James Joyce’s Ulysses. But now he came in reality, and he brought his cameras. Addressing various modes of transport during his photographic journey through Dublin, Hartmann documents his experience of being a passenger in a carriage drawn by a horse in this photograph. The close-up shot of the horse would suggest that Hartmann has come up alongside the coachman in an effort to capture the scene before them from his perspective. The reins attached to the harness are pulling to the right ever so slightly indicating the position of the coachman. To the right of the horse one can see the side of a car passing by and just ahead of the horse on the left we see the back of another carriage. We get a glimpse of someone’s feet in the left background of the work but other than this the image is devoid of human figures and the emphasis is placed on the horse and carriage mode of transport.
