DescriptionThis print is one of a large series George Wallace made in the early 1950s inspired by the landscape and clay pits of St Austell in Cornwall. At this time about half the pits were ‘worked out’ while others were still being worked. The clay was used for making porcelain. According to Malcolm Ross-MacDonald, who was Wallace’s student, Wallace took photographs of the landscape but did not sketch on the spot. He relied mainly on his imagination and ‘minds eye’ in creating these prints. This print forms part of a small collection of works on paper which complement the large body of material gifted by the Wallace family in 2016. Together, the two collections give a good picture of the art and life of George Wallace.
