DescriptionThis large-scale sketch would have been made out-of-doors and is a characteristically direct, honest rendering of a hill-farmer sheltering in the lea of a high wall. 'As the hill-farmer is so much part of the landscape I often feel the importance of including them in my paintings...with their collies they are as essential to me as the rock faces...I have always admired these tough men who battle against the wildness of the winter hills.' (From exhibition catalogue: Kyffin Williams Landscapes, Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni, 1995). Welsh artist Kyffin Williams was born on the Isle of Anglesey in 1918. He attended the Slade School of Art from 1941-1944. He taught art at Highgate School, London for many years before returning to Wales in the early 1970s. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1974 and was knighted in 2000.
