Title: The Storm

Signed: lower right: PAUL HENRY

Object Number: NGI.2015.5
DescriptionThe characteristic, skillful use of charcoal captures the dramatic light and shade effects and gives the impression of gusting wind. Although dated 1898-1899 on account of the signature type by S.B. Kennedy, it is similar in style to later charcoal storm scenes including The West Wind, 1908, Cloudscape with a Bird on a Thorn tree, 1908-1909 and Man Crossing a Bog, 1910-1919. It shows the artist's growing preoccupation with pure landscape. Henry's tendency to flatten the picture plane emphasises the architectonic elements of the composition, and betrays the influence of Whistler and Japanese prints.
