DescriptionIn 1883 the National Gallery's second director Henry Doyle bought Rembrandt's painting The Rest on the Flight into Egypt (1647), at Christies for £514. It was formerly owned by Henry Hoare of Stourhead House in Wiltshire. Earlom's print, a copy in reverse, came into the National Gallery of Ireland's collection that same year, presented by the Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures. It was published by John Boydell, an astute printseller who published series of prints after important paintings in English collections.
