DescriptionBrockhurst, an English painter and etcher, lived in Ireland between 1915 and 1919. Along with A Connemara Peasant, this print relates directly to the artist’s interest in Irish subjects while offering a powerful visual reference to the people of the West of Ireland in the early twentieth century. Two other recently acquired etchings by Brockhurst include Portrait of Oliver St John Gogarty, 1939 (NGI 2006.6), and Maureen, 1923 (NGI 2006.7), after an oil painting entitled Ireland, 1916 (Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow).
