DescriptionThis intimate image depicts O’Sullivan’s mother-in-law, Lidia Mouw. O’Sullivan met Lidia’s daughter Renée Mouw while at the Central School of Art, and they married in 1925. The drawing remained in the family until sold at auction recently. The subject matter and busy markmaking reveal the influence of Rembrandt and Walter Sickert. Although drawn in pen and ink the work could be mistaken for an etching. O’Sullivan’s choice of subject, a woman sleeping under a mound of richly patterned bedclothes, shows his interest in ordinary domestic life.
