DescriptionBuck, a well respected miniature painter, depicts the Edgeworth family of Edgeworthstown, County Longford, in an informal setting. Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817) is shown with his third wife Elizabeth Sneyd and numerous children. His eldest daughter, Maria (1767- 1849), author of Castle Rackrent, 1800, sits opposite her father, wearing a large bonnet. Richard was an engineer, amateur inventor and educational writer. In 1798 he published Practical Education, a highly acclaimed modern manual for rearing children. He was to have four wives in all and fathered 22 children.
