DescriptionIn 1927 Gleizes executed this gouache study, which relates to a proposed mural for the parish church of Serrières in the Rhône Valley. It is very similar in style and composition to Mainie Jellett’s oil Homage to Fra Angelico, exhibited in 1928 (Private Collection). Both works are based on Fra Angelico’s tempera on wood painting The Coronation of the Virgin, c.1435 (Uffizi, Florence). In 1921 Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone spent time at Gleizes’s Paris studio. Under his guidance, they experimented with geometric form, colour and rhythm.
