DescriptionHone was one of the first Irish artists to study in Paris. He lived in the city from 1853-57 before spending the next thirteen years near Fontainebleau, where he focused on landscape painting. Hone’s good friend, Edouard Brandon, painted this informal portrait. It shows Hone smoking a pipe in what appears to be a studio setting. The picture is dated 1870, suggesting that Brandon made it as a farewell gift. Hone was one of many artists who left France at that time because of the Franco-Prussian War.
