DescriptionMrs. S.C. Hall was born Anna Maria Fielding in Dublin. She moved to London, where she married. Her husband, an established journalist, encouraged her to write, and she soon published a series of sketches of Irish life that were collected into a volume entitled Sketches of Irish Character (1829). She was prolific, writing short stories, novels and plays. She also shared her husband's interest in spiritualism and was involved in many charities, including the Temperance Movement. She played an active role in her husband's work as editor for numerous newspapers. Little is known about the artist responsible for this portrait but it is known that Mr. and Mrs. Hall were in Paris in 1851.
