DescriptionA beautiful example of medieval Spanish craftsmanship, this processional cross is stylistically related to contemporary production in Aragon. This type of cross was normally fixed at the top of a wooden shaft and carried by a clerk during religious processions. Because of this exposure, such crosses were decorated on both sides. Here, the figures are decorated in gilt copper both on the front and on the verso. At the terminals copper trefoil sheets have been applied, decorated with cabochon glass stones on the front and small pieces of coloured glass on the verso.

Christ is represented on both sides of the cross. On the front he is seen hanging dead from the cross; at the terminals are respectively the Virgin, St John, a kneeling Adam and an angel emerging from the clouds with a thurible (incense burner). The verso shows the enthroned blessing Christ at the centre, and the symbols of the four Evangelists at the terminals.
