DescriptionRenowed as a great traveller and patron of the arts, Sir Watkin suceeded his father as 4th Baronet of Wymstay in Wales. On leaving Oxford University he set out on the Grand Tour in June 1768 with two companions. He remained abroad until February the following year. While in Rome he commissioned Christopher Hewestson to execute his portrait. The sculptor had arrived in the city by 1765 and lived there for the remainder of his life.
In this portrayal Sir Watkin is depicted in bust form with a drape open at the right shoulder and with curling hair and regular features.
The head is turned slighly left, in a 'speaking' pose. The eyes are incised and convey a keenly intelligent expression. The bust cost about 10 pounds and numerous casts were made from it, perhaps intended as gifts for the sitter's travelling companions.
