Title: Woman in a Grey Shawl
Date: 1830s
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions:
57 x 48 cm
Credit Line: Bequeathed, Sir Hugh Lane, 1918

DescriptionThe identities of this dark-haired woman and of the artist who painted her have been much debated over the last century. One writer described her as a ‘gypsy girl’, while another titled the picture 'La Moue' ('The Pout') on account of her seemingly petulant expression.

Sir Hugh Lane bought the painting for a high price in 1912. It was then thought to be by Goya. Lane, like many collectors of Impressionist pictures, had a keen appreciation of earlier Spanish art.
