DescriptionThis watercolour, taken from below the Rialto Bridge, was probably based on a sketch done in a gondola. Turner captures a dynamic sense of movement, as boats jostle for position along the Grand Canal. The view beyond the bridge takes in the sixteenth century Palazzo Grimani on the left, its side elevation cast in shadow.
